In April 1918, the Battles of the Lys took place. Merville has been the scene of many clashes, which will result in a very significant number of war casualties. The cemetery houses 1268 Commonwealth graves from the First World War. An extension opened in 1916, containing 620 graves, of which 345 are unidentified and 92 World War II graves, of which 18 are unidentified.
Another 19 graves of soldiers of other nationalities are present within the extension.
